TORONTO – When H1N1 came calling, Clare Kumar heard opportunity knocking.

After all, the Toronto-based professional organizer figured, a worldwide pandemic meant scores of employees confined to their homes, desperate for the services of someone who specializes in establishing effective and ergonomic home offices.

Unfortunately for Kumar, it hasn’t worked out that way: Canada’s employers, it seems, are clinging to the antiquated notion that when it comes to a job, actually going to work is Job 1.

“If your manager gets it and understands the productivity gain, then you’re in a good position,” said Kumar, whose efforts to convince Canadian companies to take her on as a work-from-home consultant have so far been largely for naught.

“If they don’t, it’s back to the dark ages.”

Still, all is not lost for the home-office revolution, say experts who anticipate the second wave of Canada’s H1N1 pandemic to bring with it a fundamental shift in corporate culture when it comes to allowing staff to work from home.

For many, the hope is that the realities of conducting day-to-day business during a pandemic will force managers to rethink their biases and make telework – once considered a viable future vision of the workaday world – a permanent part of corporate life.

Paula Allen, vice-president of organizational solutions and training with Toronto-based health and productivity consultancy Shepell.fgi, said she’s seeing evidence of that already, as clients re-evaluate many of their business practices in developing H1N1 contingency plans.

As they isolated the most critical part of their day-to-day operations, a growing number of companies are indeed realizing that a physical presence in the office wasn’t as vital as they thought, Allen said.

“One of the first and best practices was social distancing, which means giving people the opportunity to work from home,” Allen said in a telephone interview.

“As a result of actually going through that thinking, people are realizing that there is more opportunity to have people telework than what they realized previously.”

Technological advances have also helped change the thinking at companies where telework projects have failed to launch in the past, she added: Clients are taking a second look at the wider variety of sophisticated, user-friendly and inexpensive tools at their disposal these days.

Liz Wright, compensation practice leader for central Canada with Watson Wyatt Worldwide, said businesses need to realize the potential boost a strong teleworking policy could give to their recruitment efforts.

Businesses that place a high priority on employee health are more likely to attract and retain staff, Wright said. Pandemic fears have allowed – indeed, forced – some companies to reconsider how they value the health of staff.

“I think it could be a win-win on both sides, allowing employees some flexibility while ensuring that the business gets done the way it should be done,” Wright said.

“I think it’s a bit of a mindset around new ways of thinking around work, and I think employers are starting to realize that.”

Some say the pandemic is going to put the very concept of telework on trial as companies confront long-held trepidation that critics call a byproduct of mistrust and misinformation.

Apart from wary managerial attitudes, economic factors could be contributing to corporate reluctance to make changes, said Bob Fortier, president of the Canadian Telework Association.

“Faced with economic constraints and probably an already higher-than-average instance of absenteeism, many companies are hurting right now and they might not feel they have the resources to put a quick program together,” Fortier said.

Indeed, many businesses would in fact experience cost savings by tweaking their telework policies, he added.

Many managers cling to the notion that employees who are not in the office are less productive than those who are under direct supervision, said Wright.

Such attitudes have no basis in reality, said Fortier, who cites an average productivity increase of 10 per cent in the various companies he has helped to implement telework. A 2007 study by Robert Half Technology, which surveyed some 270 chief information officers, found increased productivity a common benefit of telecommuting.

Allen said she believes businesses will come to embrace the concept whole-heartedly once they’re forced to rely on it. She’s confident that working from home won’t prove a passing fad that will ebb when pandemic fears fade.

“Once people have a tool, have a skill, have an opportunity,” she said, “they use it whether there’s a crisis or not.”

MIAMI – It’s like “The Apprentice” meets Amway.

Donald Trump is putting his name on a vitamin and health products business whose salespeople make money by recruiting more salespeople.

The ubiquitous Trump is partnering with Ideal Health, a 12-year-old Massachusetts-based nutritional products company, and renaming it “The Trump Network,” though the partners won’t specify what their financial relationship is.

The products will be sold via multilevel marketing – a method of selling products through a network of distributors. Marketers receive commissions for the products they sell, along with a cut from products sold by other salespeople they’ve recruited.

Critics of such programs say that most of the products are bought by the distributors themselves, and that few of the salespeople actually come out ahead in the end.

Trump, characteristically, is blustery in his bullishness. In an email to the Associated Press, he called it a “rescue and recovery program” for people suffering through the recession, offering a shot at extra income. The company hopes the Trump name and image will help sell the products.

Trump swooped into Miami for the company’s glitzy launch last weekend, complete with gymnasts and jugglers, at a hotel in downtown Miami. Five thousand salespeople packed into the hotel to hear from The Donald himself.

That star power might mask how hard such businesses can be, said Daniel Howard, a professor of marketing at Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business.

“People are more easily persuaded when they want to believe in something,” said Howard, who has studied multilevel marketing. “Someone comes along with a big name like Donald Trump and pitches riches, it captures peoples’ attention and interest. If he made so much money, they think, ‘I’m glad I’m on board.’

The reality?

“Multilevel marketing is a tough business, and most people don’t make much money,” said Howard.

The Trump Network will compete with well-established networks such as Amway and scores of retail brands such as Centrum. It’s unclear how many such companies are out there because most are privately held, but Trump Network co-founder Todd Stanwood says that there are about 200. Amway alone says it had $8.2 billion in revenue in 2008.

Joining the Trump Network costs $48. That buys a marketing kit and three months access to a personalized website to promote the products. However, new participants are often sold a $497 package that includes the marketing kit, products, CDs, sales tips and coupons.

The products include everything from custom nutrition tests to vitamins to blueberry pomegranate bars. A 30-day supply of a customized vitamin formula costs about $57. Marketers can sell back any unsold inventory.

The website does caution: “If any product purchase creates a financial hardship, do not make the purchase. Your financial health is as important to us as your personal health.”

It also states, in a footnote: “The Trump Network does not guarantee you will earn an income.”

We know Donald Trump for his luxury high-rises, his TV show and his distinctive hairstyle. Now he’s putting his name on a vitamin and health products business whose salespeople make money by recruiting more salespeople.

Trump is jumping into the industry by partnering with Ideal Health, a 12-year-old Massachusetts-based nutritional products company, and renaming it “The Trump Network.”

He publicized the venture at a weekend-long Trump Network retreat at a downtown Miami hotel. More than 5,000 people from around the country attended.

The products will be sold by multilevel marketing.

You might have found this article because you decided to take the free tour with EZ Wealth Solution and are trying to decide if it’s a rip off or a home business scam.

My name is Sean Grimes and in this analysis, I’ll give my honest view about this program from my own personal experience. Hopefully after that, you’ll be able to decide if it’s a scam or not.

I won’t get into much detail about the program since it can be found in your members area if you took the Free EZ Wealth Tour already. My focus is to let you know my individual experience with this organization, but I first must take you back a bit to let you know how I found the system myself.

In June of 2009, I learned that I would be getting laid off from my job of 12 years in the car industry. I had been marketing online for about 4 years and had some successes and many failures as well. I knew at that very moment that I needed to do whatever it took to make something materialize with my online marketing, or I would be in big money strife.

I got in touch with an old marketing companion (Jim Carpenter) and I told him that I was in a desperate need to make money online. He then told me about EZ Wealth Solution and the achievement he was having. You see, I had already seen the EZ Wealth Solution site about 2 years ago from the time of this writing, but it just never really enthused me because I was just so fixed up in other MLM stuff.

I decided to take the EZ Wealth Tour giving it a sincere and thorough look. While taking the tour, it dawned on me how proficient the videos by the CEO were. I mean they really had me on the rim of my seat. I knew from the start that those presentations would make marketing the business really simple. I decide to go ahead and become a reseller with the system and let my sponsor pay my way in on level 1. I followed the steps to become a reseller and my sponsor paid my way in on level 1 like he said he would. I was like, “Ok, that’s pretty cool!” I then sat back and started to learn the system. It was simply too much for me to take in all at once so I figured that I would start promoting the system and just learn as I go. I’ve learned over the years that many people throw away too much time learning the

program they are in while they ought to be promoting it.

I began to refer people to the system and right away started to get new tour takers. The system would send me emails telling me exactly what to do so I did what those emails told me to do. I kept promoting it, the tour takers kept coming in and I followed up with them like my sponsor told me too. After a short time, I got my first reseller to join. I was pretty excited at this point. I then did my one time pay it forward for this member like I had agreed to do and how my sponsor had done for me. The buisness seemed to be off to a really great start. At this point, I was beginning to realize that EZ Wealth Solution was indeed an honest home based business and not a scam at all.

I then started to attend my teams live trainings that we have 3 times a week. These trainings really got me motivated. I noticed that the more trainings I attended, the better results I would have. I guess being around a room full of motivated and excited people just makes things even better. This also may be due to the fact that my upline really helps to close sales for my team in these live training sessions. All I do is invite my tour takers and they’ll do their finest to close the sales for me. It’s a splendid concept and it works really well for individuals who hate calling prospects on the phone.

Anyway, after 1 week of listening, promoting and following up, this small business really began to take off. I started to bring in new resellers almost every day and the money was coming in too. I’m not talking about $1 or $10 here as many people experience with MLM. I’m talking about money that will allow you to quit your job and best of all, I had immediate access to this money. At the time of this writing, my best day has been $435. I’m sure you are familiar with how most MLM companies pay out at the end of the month. Well, I no longer have to worry about that. I really would generate more with 1 sale than most people online will make in MLM ever! Not trying to brag. I’m just being honest. Think about it. When was the last time you joined an MLM company and earned $50 or $350 in one day and had immediate access to that money? You may have never experienced that and even if you did, I’m sure the company would only pay you if you earned $20, $50, $100 or whatever their payout threshold was set to. This is how some MLM’s companies get people. I’ve seen many people promote an MLM business, make a few sales, but never reach the payout threshold preventing them from ever getting paid. Understand that this doesn’t make these type of MLM companies scams. This is just how the game goes.

I’m still in a few MLM ventures, but I had to put them on the back burner since the EZ Wealth Solution system is just working so well for me. I make an apology to anybody who may be in one of my MLM downlines, but I have to do what I have to do to pay the bills and feed my family since I’ll be laid off from me job 2 months after this writing. You will earn commission every time someone purchases the product from your affiliate page. This is how you can make money without having a website and you can work from home of your own.
